Integral Questions

Tomorrow I'll be attending a career fair for high school students in inner city LA. For the 1st half of the day I'll be giving a short presentation in a classroom as groups of 30 high school students are cycled in and out of the room. The other half of the day I'll be standing at a booth so that students can collect brochures, pamphlets, etc.

OK. So knowing that these are high school students FROM inner city LA, what do I wear???

Option A: Button up shirt with business logo on it and jeans. Is more casual and portrays my agency's true culture. The best part of my work is that I'm not always trapped in my office and I get to wear jeans everyday to work (if I want).

Option B: Cute black & maroon pin stripped capris with maroon dressy tank and black sparkly sandals. Very cute and hip (did I really just say hip?).

Note: Pic A is from a PBS special that I was asked to participate in a few years ago. Pic B is from oldnavy.com. It's not my actual outfit but it gives you a good idea of what outfit B is all about. Except the shoes. The shoes make me want to gag.

Seriously email me and give me your opinion. I'm really stressing out over this decision. But then again, I'm getting married in 2 weeks and it seems like these days everything either stresses me out or makes me cry.

Disappointment

My bachlorette party was this weekend. Having been in a sorority I can say that I've attended many, many different types of bachlorette parties: Las Vegas, wild nights at clubs, weekend at Disneyland. I've done it all. I've also spent several hundred dollars at each party when you add up travel, drunken transportation, gifts, alcohol, food, lodging, etc. Bachlorette parties are never cheap nights.

I wanted to do something a little different for my bachlorette party so I requested that we do a long weekend of wine tasting in Temecula. To save costs I offered to let all the girls stay at my house. On Friday night everyone arrived and we went to a local brewery that specialized in slow food. On Saturday we woke up super early and went win tasting. On Sunday we chilled and went to the beach and then bar hopping. On Monday everyone went home.

Maybe I had too high of expectations but I can't help but be disappointed by the whole weekend. One of my bridesmaids (BM #2) did nothing but complain about how much money this wedding is costing her. She has never been a bridesmaid before and doesn't realize that most other brides require each BM to purchase shoes, a dress they select, as well as have their hair, makeup, and manicures done on the big day. I've tried to be a sympathetic bride and have given everyone the option of what shoes they want to wear (as long as they are nude color I could care less) and whether or not they want their hair, makeup, and nails done professionally. I even let them collectively decide on a dress that fit their budgets. That and hotel are pretty much the only costs for the wedding. It just really hurts my feelings that BM #2 feels that I'm not worth the money she is spending to be a part of the big day.

BM #1 poorly planned the weekend. Our wine tasting tour began at 9am. Much too early to enjoy drinking. Our 6 hour tasting trip ended at 2pm, just as everyone else began arriving at the wineries. She forgot to make a lunch reservation so we spent over an hour looking for a place to eat at. And she decided to fly and instead of drive down so I was pretty much the only one with a non-compact car the whole weekend. Going to the bars is fun except when you're the bride and need to drive since you're the only one with a car. It especially becomes less fun when everyone forgets cash for parking and then the bride is stuck paying the parking fee plus later getting a parking ticket for returning to the car 15 minutes late.

Maybe I expect too much from people. Maybe I give too much to people and then become upset when they don't give 110% back to me in return. I've always been the friend who pays for dinner (even when money is tight). The friend who plans the parties. The friend who drives way out of their way to be there when needed. The dependable yet fun friend. I've always just assumed that my friends would do the same for me if I ever asked but sadly I'm obviously wrong.

Making my mood worse, I came to work today to be greeted with a letter of resignation from one of my employees. She returned 2 weeks ago from 5 months of paid maternity leave. Over the past 2 weeks she decided that working and being a mom is too much hard work and that she no longer wants to work. This wouldn't be so bad but in 2 weeks I leave for 3 weeks of leave for the wedding and honeymoon. I was really depending on this employee to take up my slack while I was gone. We all knew that while she was gone for 5 months I worked many late nights and weekends to do her job plus mine. I had assumed that she would gladly pick up my slack while I was gone. Sadly I was wrong. Now I'm left without anyone to help me while I am away and to make matters worse her position wont be filled for several weeks since our budget is super tight this year.

*sigh* I'm just so disappointed today. I'm really taking a hard look at myself and how much I allow others to use me. Maybe it's the wedding that is making me more emotionally turbulent then usual but I'm really sad from the events of the last few days. I'm tired of being the constant giver. Maybe I need to become the taker.

One is the Loneliest Number

Me + Not Drinking for 16 weeks + 1/2 Glass of Wine = Half Drunk

Dave left at 5am on Monday morning for a week long meeting in St Louis. I miss that boy something fierce. Seriously, I'm so very, very lonely with out him. All I do is walk around the house moping like a lost little kitty cat. To make myself feel better (and sleep better) I decided to drink a glass of wine. Wine = Happy Me. So happy that I've suddenly become interested in Dancing With the Stars. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate reality tv? (Except MTV's "The Hills". The Hills = pure tv gold).

Summary of Today's Lesson: Wine + Reality TV = Good Stuff.

Moral of the Lesson: I should drink wine more often.

PS - The videographer scanned all our baby/kid pics into the computer so that he could prepare our slide show. He was nice enough to send me a copy of the scanned pics. Isn't 7 year old Dave the cutest thing you have ever seen???

PPS - Go Apolo Ohno!

I Think I Go To Starbucks Too Much

Talking with videographer who will be compilling the photo montage for our wedding slide show. Trying to decide where to meet since our town has 2 coffee shops on every corner (seriously).

Me: Hi. I have the pictures that you need to scan. Would you like to meet at the Starbucks on Vista Way & El Camino Real?

Him: The Starbucks that has the really small parking lot?

Me: Yep. The one that has a dentists office next door.

Him: Yes, I know the one. The one that is located close to the freeway.

Me: Yep. It's also near the Hooters.

Him: Yeah, and it

Me: Let's just stop there. We both obviously know what Starbucks we are talking about. We should probably stop now before we both start describing the baristas and their hobbies after work.

In related news, the videographer should have the photo montage completed by tomorrow (Wednesday!) YAY!

Hawaiian Cake Recipe

I baked this cake for a small office party that we had this afternoon. Everyone loved this cake (and so do I). So simple and easy to make. The perfect cake for a summer party.

Ingredients:
1 box yellow cake mix
2 small cans of mandarin oranges (drained)
1 regular size tub of cool whip
1 small package of vanilla pudding mix
1 small can of crushed pineapple (drained)

Directions:
1. Prepare yellow cake mix as directed by box. Add chopped and drained mandarin oranges to the cake mix. (I chop the mandarin oranges in the can by sticking the knife in the can and just wiggling it around. Try it, it works)
2. Bake cake
3. Prepare "frosting" by mixing cool whip, vanilla pudding mix, and crushed pineapple. After cake has cooled frost the cake. I also used the frosting as filling between the cake layers.
4. Lick frosting bowl.
5. Garnish with pineapple slices, maraschino cherries (and coconut if you're crazy like that).

The Good Times Were Killing Me

*sigh* Good times, Good times.

Exclamation!

* In 30 days (exactly!) I will be getting married. Holy Cow! Where has the time gone??? I'm dreading the passage of these last 30 days. I love the engagement stage and if I had my way I would be planning my wedding for several more months. Seriously, for me the most important thing was that Dave asked me to marry him. That to me proved that Dave was committed to me and this relationship. The legally wed bit (to me) is just added poof. We already live together, we already have sex, and we already share our lives. I could be wrong but I just don't feel much will change after June 15th.

* According to my to-do list I really don't have much left to do for the wedding but in my head it feels like I am no way near ready for the big day. My wedding dress still hasn't arrived and I'm a bit concerned that since I've lost 35 pounds, the dress wont be able to be taken in enough before the wedding. In other attire related news, today one of my bridesmaids and I plan on going to the bridal store to pick up the bridesmaids dresses. I'm so excited!

* Dave's parents, cousins, and their kids will be visiting this weekend as they drive across the State to spend a week in Disneyland. Our house is still no where near being presentable but at this point I really could care less. So what if one wall is only painted 95%? Who cares about the fact that we don't have baseboards in the living room? Window treatments? Pffffttttt!!!! Actually I do care but after how hard we've worked the past 2 months I've come to realize that this house will be a work in progress for several more months.

* Since I've been dieting, I've avoided cooking and entertaining (too much temptation). Dave has spent the past few months dining on frozen pizzas and Del Taco. Since Dave's family will be coming for a visit I decided to break out our wedding presents and make a respectable meal. On the menu: Stone Brew beer, Heather's Mist wine, green salad with strawberry vineragette, sourdough with baked brie bread, steak, grilled sausage, grilled asparagus, corn, and garlic mashed potatoes.

* I love days when I feel cute. Today I'm wearing my X2 Express Jeans (size itty bitty) that are practically brand new. I bought them several years ago but haven't been able to wear them because of my excess poundage. Now they fit perfectly (not too tight and not too loose).

* Pilates continues to kick my arse. I've so enjoyed these last few weeks and my new work out routine.

* I found this online tool which helps you figure out which clothes fit your body shape best. Quite useful. I've often tried to wear boxy shirts and jackets and been disappointed that they make me look like Frankenstein's younger sister. According to the guidelines of Shape S, boxy tops don't fit my small framed shoulders well. Makes sense (but still doesn't explain why I didn't figure that out on my own).

* Making today even more perfect is that June Gloom has arrived to the coast! Love of June Gloom is the easiest way to detect those of us who are not native coastal dwellers. San Diego regulations state that if you are a Native then you must detest the overcast coastal fog and cool temps. By the way in other San Diego news, we were recently named the most overpriced housing market in the US!

Snobby Indie Princess

A few weeks ago, a blog that I read regularly mentioned her snobby princess attitude toward chinese food. Then at the end of her blog post she asked "what are you snobby about? T.V.? Sports? Unicorns? Tell me". Initially I thought that I wasn't snobby about anything but then I realized that I'm a California snob. Yet, being a Cali snob is nothing to write home about since we can't help it if we're the best State in the Union.

My Indisputable Reasons Why California Rules:
* Food - We're the #1 ag state and produce most of the Nation's food. And we're not talking about the boring basics (corn and wheat), nope we got all the good foods like avocados, oranges, strawberries, watermelon, and peaches.
* Movies - Hello Hollywood. With out it we wouldn't have cinematic gold like "The Notebook" and "Legally Blond".
* Surfers - California has the best surf conditions in the US (Hawaii doesn't count because I don't want it to). Not to mention that any girl loves a hot surf boy on a board. How could you not?
* Wine - We have Napa AND Santa Barbara. Enough said.
* Culture - We're liberal, we're diverse, we're eccentric, and we're health conscious. Awesome.
* Good Stuff - Everyone calls us fruits & nuts but then they forget that all the good stuff started in California back when the rest of the Nation thought that it was quirky and weird. Examples: yoga, sushi, and tofu.

Anyways I digress, as I said being a Cali snob was nothing to write home about. Then yesterday I received an email from my future mother in law (FMIL). There's only 5 weeks until the wedding and suddenly discussing what we plan to eat for breakfast the day after the wedding has become a topic of utmost importance. In the email FMIL mentioned buying bagels from the local grocery store. At this point my head turned bright red and began spinning.

It's then that I realized that the one thing I am a snob about is Food. It's not that I detest bagels, no in fact I love bagels. I'm just a snob about the source of my food. I snub anything pre-packaged, frozen, or canned (with the exception of Diet Coke and Lean Cuisines). To me buying bagels from the grocery store is disgusting but buying bagels from Panera that are fresh baked are okay. Gelatin fruit cups are disgusting but fresh fruit cups are awesome (and hard to find). I would never eat Leggo Eggo waffles but I love whole wheat waffles. White bread would never pass my lips but I love whole grain wheat bread. Canned veggies are a definite no, but I could eat fresh veggies by the truck load. You get the idea. I can't help how I feel and this is a topic that I feel pretty strongly about.

Is anyone else as snobby as me about something?

This is Why Dave Loves Our Neighborhood

I'm in the State Capitol on a business trip. Dave calls me on the phone to let me know that a picture of our neighbor's house is in the paper. Seriously, this house is located 2 doors down from ours. I thought we had met all the neighbors but obviously I was wrong. Meet our neighbor:

Escondido a quiet corner of 'D.C. Madam's' life

By: QUINN EASTMAN - Staff Writer

ESCONDIDO -- Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the woman recently accused by federal prosecutors of running a Washington, D.C., prostitution business by phone from California, owns a house in Escondido, but her neighbors said last week that it provided her a quiet refuge, rather than a remote command post.

Palfrey, also dubbed the "D.C. Madam," revealed some of her clients' identities on a much-hyped 20/20 show on ABC on Friday night.

Palfrey's next-door neighbor at her house, north of the Escondido Country Club, Lea Beaver, estimated that Palfrey visited her Escondido house only a few days each month. Beaver said she didn't notice an unusual amount of traffic.

Palfrey once invited Beaver over when Palfrey's mother, Blanche, was visiting, she said.

"She said she was an interior designer," said Beaver, adding that the idea made sense to her because each room inside Palfrey's house was painted a different pastel color.

A federal grand jury indicted Palfrey in March on money-laundering charges connected with her alleged escort service. She previously pleaded guilty to pimping charges in the early 1990s in San Diego.

Court documents support neighbors' views that Palfrey did not use the Escondido house, which is now for sale, as part of her business, called Pamela Martin and Associates. The business is described on Palfrey's Web site as a "high-end adult fantasy firm" that operated in the Washington, D.C., area for 13 years.

Court documents show that federal agents hauled stacks of financial records and a computer from Palfrey's primary residence in Vallejo after obtaining search warrants in October.

But they did not obtain search warrants for her home on the 1400 block of Vaquero Glen.

Her indictment says she had checks or money orders mailed to her at a post office box in Benicia, and had calls forwarded to her cell phone.

Her attorney, Montgomery Sibley, did not return calls from the North County Times.

Raccoons

Deputy Secretary of State Randall Tobias resigned in April when ABC News, to whom Palfrey has given her phone records, asked him whether he was a client.

While other past clients in Washington may fear more revelations from Palfrey, several of her Escondido neighbors had a more mundane concern last week: Raccoons have dug a hole in her shingle roof.

"We covered it today with plastic," Beaver said.

The neighborhood around Vaquero Glen seemed idyllic last week, with a few children riding their bicycles and skateboards in the street.

Palfrey's house has a "For Sale" sign in front, but all of the real estate agent's brochures are gone. The driveway, which is covered with brown fluff from a nearby tree, makes it clear that nobody has swept it for weeks.

As part of her indictment in March, federal authorities froze the Vaquero Glen house along with Palfrey's Vallejo home, bank accounts and gold coins. The move requires court approval for a sale and prevents the sale of the Escondido house from benefiting Palfrey while she is under indictment.

Even so, Beaver said a real estate agent has been showing the house to possible buyers and one in particular seems interested.

Vaquero Glen residents said they learned of Palfrey's legal troubles when a property forfeiture notice was posted on her door in October.

"It was a pretty big surprise," said Ann Boozer, who lives next door to her on the other side.

But she said she had a clue something was happening in September when she called Palfrey about a gardening issue and Palfrey told her that her real estate agent would handle it, because she was moving to Germany.

Palfrey made a brief visit to the Escondido house a few months ago with a tow truck, Boozer said.

Palfrey's lawyers, in federal court filings, say that she has left the United States twice since October.

Several neighbors said they had been interviewed by TV reporters on their front lawns and were tired of the attention.

Palfrey bought the Escondido house in 2000. It still has a mortgage and its most recent property tax bill has not been paid, according to county records.

Palfrey grew up in Pennsylvania, attended college in Florida and moved to San Diego in the 1980s, according to The Associated Press.

She previously owned a condominium on Mount Alifan Drive near Genesee Avenue in San Diego, according to county records.

She was arrested by San Diego police in 1990 on charges of pimping, pandering and extortion. She did not appear at trial but fled to the Canadian border before pleading guilty to pimping charges in 1992 in San Diego Superior Court and serving 18 months in prison, according to The Associated Press.

Honestly, I'd Rather Not Be There

About 2 years ago, while I was still working in the Bay Area, the house across the street from our office went up in flames. A man (who lived there alone) was making himself a mid day snack of bacon and eggs when he started a small grease fire. By the time he drove down the 1/2 mile driveway the house was completely up in flames. (Our office was located out in the middle of wine country so it was kinda rural). That day I had decided to go home early (for no real reason other then I was bored) so I missed the whole excitement. The next day when I came into work, I looked out my office window and saw the charred skeletal remains of the house.

Six months ago a brand new apartment complex located a few blocks from our office went up in flames. The flames shot up over 100 feet from the 4 story building. The flames and smoke smothered our office. That day I had decided to take the day off work (for a reason I don't even remember). Once again I missed all the excitement.

Today, a woman was driving her car down the street with 3 loose cats in the car. The woman lost control of her car, drove between my building and the tree lined sidewalk, before hitting a tree and then the wall below my office window. The entire office shook with the impact from the car. Five minutes earlier I had decided to grab an iced green tea from the local coffee shop. I wasn't going to get a tea but one of my office mates convinced me at the last minute.

Once again, I missed all the excitement. Coincidence or not???

Obligatory Picture Post

To see each picture bigger, just click on the thumbnail.

One of the biggest selling points of this house was the fact that it had cathedral ceilings in the living room and master bedroom. Big mistake!!! 17 foot high ceilings meant that painting the house on our own was a major bitch. To complete the painting we had to rent 2 story scaffolding from Home Depot and Dave had to perch on the very top while attempting to paint. In this picture Dave is standing on the 1st story of the scaffolding. While he was on the 2nd story I was too busy pacing the floor to be able to take a picture of him.

Dave and I on the way to Yosemite. Notice my awesome new sun glasses. $15.99 at Target.

While we were touring the Yosemite valley floor it decided to snow on us.

Here I am ready to kick some ass at the Jack-N-Jill shower. I hate opening presents at showers. I think it's SOOOO boring to watch someone open each present and exclaim "OOOOooo! Just what I wanted. Thank you." I feel like saying "ummm ... Don't act surprised that you just got a toaster. You registered for the damn thing. Of course it's 'just what you wanted'. This is such a waste of time". So of course I was not looking forward to the fact that my future MIL was insisting that I open presents at our shower.

Our new bamboo floors and couch. I am in love with this room! I can't wait to buy curtains so that we can complete the room. Here is a picture of what the room originally looked like.

I wasn't going to pay a calligrapher $2 per invitation to do the writing on our invites. Instead I bought a book at a local hobby store for $15 and learned how to write calligraphy so that I could do all the invitations myself. I think they turned out pretty nice if I say so myself.

This is my mom, me and grandma at my bridal shower. It actually turned out to be a rather pleasant experience (my mom and I have a tumultuous relationship).

I be up in the gym just working on my fitness

For four solid years I worked out at the gym 6 days a week. My common routine included 4 days of 50 minutes cardio, 2 days of total body strength training, 1 day yoga or pilates, and 1 day kickboxing or step. This all stopped a year ago when I hurt my back. For 4 months after the accident I wasn't allowed to exercise (beyond walking). When it came time for me to get back in the rhythm of working out I had moved to San Diego and my work days were long and hard. When I finally finished my 10 hour work day I was often tired which became my common excuse as to why I should skip the gym that day. I occasionally participated in a weekly yoga class as well as a weekly belly dancing class (fun but expensive) but I never could get back to my gym routine which I loved so much. I've said it before, I'm not naturally skinny. I need to go to the gym to stay at a reasonable weight and not to mention I find exercising to be a completely cathartic and emotionally relaxing experience.

For the past 2 months I've been so busy with house and wedding stuff so going to the gym has not been an option. I think this was the perfect break that allowed me to stop stressing over my exercise habits and really focus on what I should do to get back to the gym routine. I decided that what I needed to do was wake up 30 minutes earlier in the morning, exercise, then come to work 30 minutes later in the day. In the beginning I would only work out 15 minutes per day then as time progressed I would increase my work out time by 5 or 10 minutes until I hit my goal of 50 minutes per session. In addition I plan on attending 2 evening mat pilates classes per week.

Today is day 2 of my new work out plan and I must admit that even though I'm not a morning person this new plan is working out beautifully. I have no excuses at 5:30 am as to why I can't go to the gym and it feels good when I get off work knowing that I can go straight home, sit on my butt, and not feel guilty! I feel like a giant weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

PS - Only down side to starting a new gym routine: I am SO hungry, ALL the time! Feed me.

Parting of the Sensory

I'm alive ... barely. For awhile I thought that this house was going to kill me. Then I thought that the wedding was going to kill me. I was pretty sure that work was going to kill me. Then I thought that Dave was going to kill me (or I was going to kill him, whichever came first). My life is now more settled and I've never been so grateful to be able to sit down at the end of the day. For the past month my day has begun at 5:30 am and not ended until 10:30 or 11:00 pm. I know that others have it much harder then me but I couldn't help but be stressed out by all that was going on in our lives.

Things I have done in the past few weeks:
* had a bridal shower
* finished painting inside of house
* installed bamboo floors
* addressed and stuffed wedding invitations
* flew to san francisco bay area
* drove to yosemite
* toured the yosemite valley floor
* completed food tasting and wine selections for dinner (mmmm ... beef wellington)
* taken engagement photos
* met with dj and made all song selections
* had jack-n-jill shower
* packed entire apartment in one day
* moved
* broke my right hand middle finger
* unpacked entire house (holy cow it feels good to be "home")
* worked
* lost a few more pounds (I'm at 34 pounds total now)
* began working out, again (tomorrow is mat pilates and I am SO excited)

When I began this blog I never intended it to be a journal of my days. It is a nice way to keep in touch with people but I was really hoping that instead it would be a place where I could exercise my creativity and writing skills. I'm naturally an analytical thinker and sometimes I feel like I need to work extra hard at being a creative person. Unfortunately, these past few months have been so busy and I feel like I don't have time to explore my emotions. Each time I blog it ends up being some type of catch up post. This aggravates me greatly and I'm hoping in the future to change that. We'll see ...
